About
Cinematographer, colorist, producer and educator with 25+ years in production and post. He now spends his teaching time on private one-on-one sessions instead of classrooms — one person, one real project, 75 minutes.

Yan's work has run across the whole pipeline rather than a single seat: shooting, editing, color, compositing, 3D, and producing. That range is the reason a session can move from a node graph to a camera decision to how a job was scoped without changing gears — most problems people bring are not confined to one application.
He spent part of his career at Apple as a Senior Systems Engineer and is an Apple Certified Trainer, work that involved explaining complex post-production systems to professional users rather than beginners. He is also a certified trainer for Adobe and Autodesk, an educator for Maxon, and an FAA-certified drone pilot.
Yan taught 3D, VFX and compositing at New York University, and has appeared as an instructor and speaker at industry events including NAB, SIGGRAPH and Macworld, along with training sessions hosted by organisations such as Manhattan Edit Workshop and DV Expo East. The teaching has always been aimed at working people — editors, shooters and artists with deadlines — not at absolute beginners.
The private sessions are a continuation of that. A one-to-one call gets further in 75 minutes than a group class does in a day, because the entire session is spent on the specific thing in front of you.
Yan is based in South Florida. Sessions run online worldwide over a video call with screen sharing, or in person in the South Florida area. Every session is 75 minutes for $225, and you're encouraged to write first — describe the problem, and he'll tell you honestly whether a session is the right answer for it.
